SAARC countries to work jointly to eliminate child labour

SAARC member countries today resolved to jointly work towards total elimination of child labour. Inaugurating the second SAARC regional Workshop on Child Labour the Minister of State, Labour and Employment Kodikunnil Suresh said elimination of Child Labour is an act of faith and commitment on the part of every member state in the SAARC region.

He said a clear national policy against the exploitation of children is the fundamental basis and point of significance for governmental action to combat the menace. The government has embarked on a holistic and robust multi-pronged strategy to tackle the problem of child labour.

Mr Suresh also said that measures were taken to create an environment where families are not forced to send their children to work. Highlighting the plight of poverty as the foremost reason for parents to compel their children to work, the minister said the problem can be resolved through convergence of various welfare projects for child labour families.
