NATO Secretary Rasmussen arrives in Kabul

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen arrived in Kabul on a visit to Afghanistan. He will hold meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other members of the Afghan government.

He will also meet the representative of the Afghan civil society. His visit comes at a time when the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is gradually withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan handing over security responsibility of the country to Afghan forces.

The transition of security responsibility in Afghanistan is due to be completed by the end of 2014. Currently 1,00,000 ISAF soldiers belonging to 50 NATO and allied nations which also include 68,000 US soldiers. The US has decided to withdraw 34,000 of its troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year.

Meanwhile the number of Afghan security forces have gone up to 3,50,000.
