Mumbai blasts case: SC dismisses Zaibunissa & 2 other convicts' plea for extension of time to surrender

The Supreme Court dismissed the plea of 71-year-old Zaibunissa Kazi and other two convicts for extension of time to surrender to undergo jail term in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. The apex court said, extension of time to surrender can't be given on the ground clemency plea is pending before the President. Kazi had approached the Supreme Court by way of a review petition praying for reconsideration of its decision and converting her sentence into the one already undergone. Kazi, like Actor Sanjay Dutt, has got five years' sentence. Actor Sanjay Dutt was held guilty for possession of arms, given to him by gangster Abu Salem, and their subsequent destruction.

Some of the weapons from this cache were kept at Kazi's suburban Bandra house for a few days. Both Kazi and Dutt were charged under TADA Act for aiding and abetting a terrorist act and the Arms Act. But Dutt was held guilty only under the Arms Act while Kazi was convicted under TADA too. Sanjay Dutt yesterday approached the Supreme Court seeking more time to surrender to serve his remaining three-and-a-half-year jail term.
