Karnataka launches Re 1 per kg rice scheme for BPL cardholders

Karnataka government today launched the much awaited ambitious rice scheme for below poverty line families. Under the scheme, every BPL family will get 30 kg rice at Re 1 per kg every month.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah kick started the program by symbolically distributing 30 kg of rice to three BPL cardholders at a grand function, here today.

"Our aim is to make Karnataka a 'hunger free' state," said the chief minister after launching the scheme.

The government will spend Rs 4,300 crore annually for the program.
