Every year 21st March is being observed as World Forests Day to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests and of trees outside forests.
The World Forestry Day was established in the year 1971 at the 23rd General Assembly of European Confederation of Agriculture and later it was established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on November 28, 2012.

Theme for 2016:

The theme of the 2016 International Day of Forests is “Forests and water”. The theme highlights importance of forests as key factor to the planet’s supply of freshwater, which is essential for life. To mark the Day a joint celebration of the International Day of Forests (21st of March) and World Water Day, which is celebrated on 22nd of March every year will be held on Monday, 21 March 2016 in the Economic and Social Council Chamber.

Background

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had proclaimed 21 March the World Forests Day by adopting resolution A/RES/67/200 on 28 November 2012. The first World Forests Day was observed on 21 March 2013.
